Sheri and Shmuel Feld
Raising an Autistic Child
Sheri and Shmuel Feld after dating for way too long, were married in 1990. They both worked in education: Shmuel teaching Judiacs and Sheri involved in special education and early childhood. In January 2000, Kalaiv their oldest was born. Kalaiv had significant internal pain and rarely slept for the first several months of his life. The couple began to ask his pediatrician if Kalaiv was autistic starting when he was six months old and did not demonstrate a startle reflex, answer to his name, and have peer interaction. It took until Kalaiv was two to be diagnosed and start to get intervention therapy. In 2009 and 2012, Sheri and Shmuel had two more boys, Zecharyah and Ovadyah, who are more typically developing and Kalaiv loves them most when they are quiet. Along the way, Shmuel got Smicha, received a Masters in Education, and worked in various Jewish Day Schools as a teacher and/or administrator all with the support of his patient wife. Life has continued to be interesting as Shmuel currently runs a non-profit (Jewish Education Innovation Challenge) while Sheri is full time with the rest of their life in Silver Spring, MD.
