Challenges for American Olim & for Gap Year Students
Dr Wachtel made aliya in 2002 following a 30-year career as a school psychologist in both Jewish day school and public high school settings. He holds a PhD in Counseling Psychology and wrote his doctoral dissertation on Career Decision-Making. For over 20 years, Dr. Wachtel directed a Career Mentoring Program for high school students which was recognized by New York State as an Exemplary Educational Practice. He created and implemented several courses designed to enhance student decision-making ability that were taught as an elective in the high school curriculum. Dr. Wachtel also served as a leading advocate for offering parenting workshops to create greater awareness of challenges facing today's adolescents and to provide take-home messages to assist in addressing them.
Dr. Wachtel founded Kav L'Noar in 2004 to fill a void in the social services offered to English-speaking olim families confronting their teenagers emotional and behavioral challenges in a setting that provided both cultural and language sensitivity. After 13 years of empowering parents to engage their teens and strive for healthy and stable relationships, Kav L'Noar has expanded its mission to include Native Israeli families and olim families from France. Dr. Wachtel envisions a time when Kav L'Noar will establish satellite centers in communities around Israel where its programs and services can be offered in closer proximity to those families who need it.
